Key Heat Treatment Notes:
1.2379 hardens through air cooling, minimizing distortion after heat treatment.
Nitriding is possible after special heat treatment for enhanced surface wear resistance.
Higher austenitizing temperatures (1050–1080°C) increase wear resistance at the expense of toughness.
Tempering between 300–500°C should be avoided due to the risk of temper embrittlement.

What is the difference between 1.2379, X153CrMoV12, and D2?
They refer to the same material under different designation systems. 1.2379 is the Werkstoff number, X153CrMoV12 is the EN/DIN short name, and D2 is the AISI equivalent. All three designations describe the same 12% chromium cold work tool steel. The material is supplied according to EN ISO 4957 as standard.
What is the maximum hardness achievable with 1.2379?
1.2379 can be hardened to 62–64 HRC after quenching. The recommended working hardness for most cold work applications is 58–62 HRC, which provides an optimal balance of wear resistance and toughness.
Is 1.2379 suitable for nitriding?
Yes. 1.2379 can be nitrided after special heat treatment to achieve surface hardness of up to 70 HRC. Nitriding provides enhanced surface wear resistance while maintaining a tough core, making it ideal for high-wear cold forming tools.
How does forged 1.2379 differ from rolled 1.2379?
Forged bars offer superior internal soundness with refined grain structure and better carbide distribution. This results in improved machinability, enhanced polishability, and more consistent performance in large-section tooling applications. Forged bars are particularly recommended for diameters above 150 mm.
Which European industries commonly use 1.2379?
1.2379 is widely used across European manufacturing sectors including automotive stamping (Germany, Czech Republic, Slovakia), precision engineering (Italy, Austria), woodworking tools (Sweden, Finland), and general cold forming industries. Germany represents the largest market for this grade in Europe, followed by Italy and France.
