Cr8Mo2SiV mold steel

Cr8Mo2SiV Steel Plate

Cr8Mo2SiV is a high-carbon, medium-chromium cold-work die steel in the Chinese standard GB/T 1299-2014. It corresponds to DC53 in the Japanese JIS G4404 standard and is classified as an alloy tool steel. This steel grade was developed by Daido Steel Co., Ltd. of Japan as an improved version based on SKD11 (Cr12MoV). By reducing the carbon and chromium contents, it suppresses the formation of ledeburite eutectic, allowing M7C3 carbides to precipitate finely and uniformly; at the same time, the Mo content is increased to achieve high-temperature tempering strength and toughness superior to those of SKD11. As a professional forging plant, Jiangyin Eternal Heavy Industry Co., Ltd. adopts the process route of EF+LF+VD melting → primary rolling/cogging of 3 t steel ingots → forging. It supplies Cr8Mo2SiV steel plates/flat bars suitable for drawing dies (deep drawing dies), cold stamping dies, cold forging dies, thread rolling dies, etc. Thickness specifications cover 6–200 mm, width 100–800 mm, and precision-ground plates can be customized according to drawings.

Cr8Mo2SiV Application

Cr8Mo2SiV steel plate is particularly suitable for the following applications:

  • Drawing dies / deep drawing dies: Significant toughness advantage; cracking and chipping resistance is greatly improved compared with SKD11, making it the preferred material for complex drawing dies.

  • Precision stamping dies / blanking dies: Fine and uniform carbides and low residual stress after wire cutting; suitable for precision, long-life stamping dies.

  • Cold forging dies / cold extrusion dies: High bending strength and fracture toughness; not prone to fracture under heavy impact loads.

  • Thread rolling dies (flat/cylindrical): Combines wear resistance and toughness.

  • Forming rolls: Excellent match of hardness and strength-toughness after high-temperature tempering.

  • Stainless steel sheet punches: Galling resistance and wear resistance.

Industry Challenges and Forging Process Solutions

Pain Point 1: Large Blocky Eutectic Carbides Leading to Failed Ultrasonic Inspection

Problem description: Conventional Cr8Mo2SiV (DC53) tends to form large blocky eutectic carbides during solidification, resulting in failure in ultrasonic inspection and severely affecting die life and quality. This has long been a technical bottleneck restricting the development of the industry.

Our solution: Pulsed magneto-oscillation (PMO) technology is used to regulate the solidification process of the ingot. By applying a pulsed magnetic field with a specific peak current, the solidification structure is refined and central segregation is alleviated, thereby inhibiting the formation of large blocky eutectic carbides from the source. In addition, a multi-directional repeated forging and upsetting–drawing densification process is adopted to fully break down the as-cast carbides, resulting in fine and uniformly distributed carbide particles.

Pain Point 2: Poor Hot Ductility and Low Yield in Primary Rolling/Blooming

Problem description: During primary rolling/blooming, this steel is prone to perforation, fracture, corner cracking, and edge/surface cracking. It also exhibits high deformation resistance, resulting in an extremely low overall product yield.

Our solution: Through extensive process validation, the root cause of overheating and burning of Cr8Mo2SiV steel ingots was identified. A heating schedule consisting of 6 h soaking in the low-temperature stage plus 1 h soaking in the high-temperature stage was determined to be optimal, effectively preventing internal cracking caused by uneven temperature. In addition, appropriate amounts of Ti and Re were added during smelting to improve high-temperature ductility, and the hot-transfer/hot-charging delay time was controlled to avoid “hot-charging cracks,” thereby significantly improving the overall product yield.

Pain Point 3: Insufficient Impact Toughness of Drawing Dies Leading to Premature Cracking

Problem description: After conventional quenching plus high-temperature tempering, although the hardness is high, the impact toughness is somewhat low. Under impact conditions, cracks are easily initiated, shortening die life.

Our solution: During the forging stage, by increasing the forging ratio and optimizing the deformation temperature (approximately 1100°C) and deformation rate, a distorted austenite structure with high dislocation density is obtained, providing sufficient recrystallization nucleation sites for subsequent heat treatment and refining the grains. Meanwhile, according to the latest in-situ observation research in 2025, the quenching heating temperature is strictly controlled not to exceed 1180°C to avoid overheating and burning caused by remelting of low-melting-point eutectic phases. Users are recommended to adopt high-temperature tempering at 520–530°C to achieve the secondary hardening peak, balancing both hardness and toughness.

FAQ

Are Cr8Mo2SiV and DC53 the same material?

Yes. DC53 is the trade name of Daido Steel Co., Ltd. in Japan, and its corresponding Chinese national standard grade is Cr8Mo2SiV (GB/T 1299-2014). Their chemical composition and performance specifications are basically identical.

What is the recommended hardness for Cr8Mo2SiV steel plates used in drawing dies?

For deep drawing dies, quenching at 1030°C plus double tempering at 520–530°C for 2 h each is recommended, with hardness controlled at 60–62 HRC, balancing wear resistance and cracking resistance/toughness. If the workpiece material is relatively thin and the die geometry is complex, the hardness may be appropriately reduced to 58–60 HRC to improve toughness.

What is the difference between your steel plates and ordinary Cr8Mo2SiV on the market?

We use PMO pulsed magneto-oscillation to refine the solidification structure + multi-directional repeated forging to break down eutectic carbides + strict six-surface ultrasonic inspection. Carbide particle size and distribution uniformity are superior to those of conventionally rolled plates, and the ultrasonic inspection pass rate is ≥98%, making our plates particularly suitable for precision drawing dies with stringent internal quality requirements.

What is the delivery condition of the steel plates? Can you machine finished products?

The standard delivery condition is spheroidized annealed (≤255 HBW), which facilitates user machining. We can also provide rough machining (leveling, slitting, milling/grinding) and finish machining (precision-ground plates, cutting according to drawings) services.

Do you provide material certification and heat treatment recommendations?

Each batch of steel plates is accompanied by a third-party inspection report (including chemical composition, hardness, and ultrasonic inspection results). We also provide detailed heat treatment process recommendations and can provide customized heat treatment solutions according to the specific service conditions of the user's dies.

How should one choose between Cr8Mo2SiV and Cr12MoV (SKD11)?

The impact toughness of Cr8Mo2SiV is approximately twice that of SKD11, its carbides are finer and more uniform, and its wire-cutting deformation is smaller, making it more suitable for drawing dies and precision stamping dies with complex shapes and impact loads. Cr12MoV still has a cost advantage in high-wear, low-impact applications.
