H13 Mould Die Steel

In 2026, the global manufacturing sector continues to accelerate its transition towards high-end and green production. As the ‘mother of industry’, the performance of mould steel—the core consumable in moulds—directly determines the precision and service life of finished products in China’s smart manufacturing sector.

In Wuxi, Jiangsu, a company named Jiangyin Eternal Heavy Industry Co., Ltd. is emerging as a standout player amidst fierce competition amongst mould steel manufacturers, thanks to its disruptive innovations in mould steel production processes. Jiangyin Eternal primarily produces mould steels such as H13, H11, P20, 718H, D2 and 5CrNiMo, with a monthly output of 1,000 tons

The ‘Chinese Solution’ to the Imbalance Between Supply and Demand for High-End Die Steel

According to industry data, although the annual output value of the domestic mould manufacturing sector is growing at a rate of 10%–15 %, more than 100,000 metric tonnes of high-quality, large-sized, long-life mould steel are still reliant on imports each year, costing billions in foreign exchange. The market has long been monopolised by established mould steel manufacturers such as ASSAB of Sweden, Daido of Japan, Hitachi of Japan, Bärluf of Austria and Sast of Germany.

This challenge highlights three key weaknesses of domestically produced mould steel: insufficient material purity, poor microstructural uniformity and substandard isotropic properties. However, through continuous research and testing, as well as equipment upgrades and process re-engineering, Jiangyin Eternal has demonstrated that domestically produced mould steel is fully capable of securing a foothold in the mid-to-high-end market.

The Philosophy of Static Press in a 2,000-tonne Rapid Forging Press

Upon entering Jiangyin Eternal’s production facility, the first impression shatters preconceptions of a traditional forging workshop—there is no deafening clanging, nor is the air thick with dust. At the heart of this transformation lies a redefinition of the core equipment used in its tool steel processes.

1. A Process Upgrade: From ‘Impact’ to ‘Static Press’

Traditional air hammers or impact forging rely on the instantaneous impact of kinetic energy; whilst this achieves rapid forming, it is highly prone to causing uneven internal stresses in the steel, and may even result in micro-cracks. In contrast, the 2,000-tonne high-speed hydraulic forging press adopted by Jiangyin Eternal utilises hydraulic drive to achieve ‘static press’.

Enhanced control over both process and shape: The press applies pressure slowly at a controlled speed, ‘gently kneading’ the steel ingot much like kneading dough. This die steel manufacturing process not only reduces noise and meets green manufacturing requirements but, more importantly, allows operators to achieve precise control within ±10 mm via a joystick.

Maximised material utilisation: Static pressing ensures the integrity of the metal flow lines, avoiding the turbulent flow caused by impact. This provides extremely high dimensional accuracy for subsequent processing, significantly reducing material waste for customers during the machining stage.

2. The ‘multi-stage upsetting and drawing’ forging method: the secret weapon for eliminating porosity and segregation

To address the widespread issues of porosity and segregation in domestically produced mould steel, Jiangyin Eternal has reinforced the ‘multi-stage upsetting and drawing’ process in its manufacturing workflow. Coarse steel ingots are repeatedly flattened and drawn out under a press; this process thoroughly eliminates internal porosity in the ingots and evenly disperses non-metallic inclusions.

Data-backed evidence: Products treated using this mould steel process have delivered outstanding results in impact toughness tests. Taking the market-leading H13 mould steel grade as an example, its impact energy consistently exceeds 300 J, whereas conventional products on the market typically achieve around 100 J. This means that under extreme operating conditions, such as high-pressure die-casting or hot extrusion, Jiangyin Eternal’s products offer nearly three times the resistance to cracking.

Focus On Mould Die Steel

As a specialist manufacturer of mould steel, Jiangyin Eternal does not pursue blind expansion of production capacity, but instead focuses precisely on the high-end hot-work mould steel market. By 2026, its core product range will include:

H13 and 8418 series: Optimised for thermal fatigue resistance, these are designed for the extrusion of hard aluminium alloys, the production of industrial aluminium profiles and large-scale die-casting moulds.

8407 and H11 series: Designed to meet the stringent requirements for high-temperature strength and wear resistance in mould steel for integrated die-casting in new energy vehicles.

The company’s average monthly output in 2026 will be stable at 1,000 tonnes, with an annual target exceeding 10,000 tonnes. Whilst ramping up production capacity, its core selling point lies in ‘consistent quality’. Through the adoption of automated and intelligent operating standards, hardness variations within the same batch of mould steel are strictly controlled within an extremely narrow range, thereby resolving the pain point faced by mould manufacturers of high scrap rates caused by material fluctuations.

The key to extending the service life of moulds

For users, the value of die steel lies not in its unit price, but in its ‘total life-cycle cost’. Through static press forging, Jiangyin Eternal has achieved a qualitative leap in the isotropic properties of the steel.

Traditional forging methods often result in significant differences in the mechanical properties of steel between the transverse and longitudinal directions, whereas Jiangyin Eternal’s products achieve uniform strength across all three dimensions. Whether the die is subjected to vertical pressure or lateral compressive force, it demonstrates a highly consistent yield strength. For large die-casting moulds with complex structures, this is a key factor in extending their service life.

Jiangyin Eternal

At present, a simple price war is no longer sustainable. The experience of Jiangyin Eternal Heavy Industry Co., Ltd demonstrates that Chinese mould steel manufacturers can break the monopoly on imports by upgrading their equipment to high-end standards, adopting green manufacturing processes and implementing data-driven quality control.

From ‘static press’—a strategic move that outflanks competitors—to the ultimate precision of ‘±10 mm’, this Wuxi-based enterprise not only provides high-quality products such as 2026 H13 mould steel but also demonstrates the determination of China’s traditional manufacturing sector to transition towards greener and higher-end production. Amidst the wave of domestic substitution, Jiangyin Eternal is redefining the quality standards of Chinese-made mould steel through its solid technical expertise.
